Layout paper is excellent for rough work. The paper is thin and relatively see-through, especially when used on a light box. Good quality layout paper will take ink, markers and pencil and even a light wash.

Ingres paper and sugar paper are not suitable for watercolour but may be suitable for pastels and gouache where the colour of the paper will not adversely affect the quality and colour of the paint. Ingres paper is particularly useful for illustrations where the subject is white as one can see what one is painting. Manila board, originally made from hemp and yellow in colour is usually the paper used for making stencils. It is strong and coated with a solution of turpentine and linseed oil to make it waterproof. The combination of these two substances on the board needs careful handling and the prepared board should not be stored as there is the possibility of spontaneous combustion.
